Warren Buffett On The Value of "Forecasts"Â
I have attended almost fifteen Berkshire Hathaway annual meetings since 2005. At each meeting, Warren and Charlie take open-mic questions for about six hours. It’s hard for me to think of any other concentrated time that has informed me more about business, life, and the world. They are national treasures in the flesh. Â
It is in that spirit that I am announcing my fifth social media series called Meaningful Quotes.
Often quotes are often a dime a dozen on the internet and can be more noise than signal. My intent is to curate - meaningful - quotes and pass them along. Â
It is, thus, fitting that the first post in this series is from Warren Buffett, and it’s about the topic of forecasts. Â
I can’t recall the first time I heard this quote, but the first time I did. It stuck. It made so much sense. Â
Buffett's not saying forecasts don’t represent a view about what's possible, perhaps probable, but don't rely on them. They represent one possible view of the future from one person or entity. And that’s all they represent. Nobody knows the future. Just think of 9/11, Ukraine, or Covid if you need supporting evidence.
